Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It is due to a breakdown of cartilage in the joints and bones. It commonly occurs in the joints of the knees, hips, and spine and it affects millions of people every year. Osteoarthritis happens when the cartilage that protects the bones in our joints progressively wears away over time.

Here are some things to know about osteoarthritis:

  • Symptoms: The most common symptoms of osteoarthritis are aching and sore joints. Many patients complain of pain after extended periods of movement or inactivity. There is also usually a swelling of the joints associated with this disease. Soreness or discomfort can also be experienced when pressure is applied to the affected area.
  • Risk Factors: Age is one of the biggest risk factors for osteoarthritis. We know that older people are at a greater risk for the disease due to wear and tear over the years. It is also more common in women. Weight is another important risk factor. Carrying extra weight puts more pressure on the joints. Joint injuries can also be a contributory risk factor.
  • Treatment: One of the most common treatments for osteoarthritis is exercise. It helps to reduce the pain and aids in continuing to maintain healthy joints. A healthy diet and lots of rest are also beneficial in treating the disease. Hot and cold compresses have also been known to help with stiff and aching joints.
