Simply put, sciatica is pain caused by problems with the sciatic nerve. The pain is typically felt along the path of the sciatic nerve, which usually runs down the lower back to the legs. Sciatica is generally more painful in an elderly person than in a younger individual.
Some things to know about sciatic nerve pain:
- What are the signs? The most common signs of sciatica are lower back, hip or leg pain. Tingling or burning are also symptoms. If the pain worsens when one sits and makes getting back up difficult, these are also likely signs of this condition.
- What are the causes? There are several causes for sciatica such as pregnancy, injury, and spasms. Typically any ailment that involves the spine and nerves running along the back can cause this pain.
- How is sciatica treated? There are several ways to treat this condition. Hot or cold packs are a great way to help in reducing the swelling and ease the pain. Mild stretching is another effective way to treat sciatica. Moderate exercises such as riding an exercise bike or swimming are helpful. Workouts can become more intense as the pain subsides.
- Can it be prevented? Sciatica can be prevented in certain cases. Exercising on a regular basis is one way to help prevent this pain from occurring. Another way to potentially avoid the development of sciatic nerve pain is good posture and avoiding sitting for long periods of time.
